The weather warmed somewhat this past weekend so off we went to do some more exploring of the Beara Peninsula. And I'll spare you the suspense and tell you right now, Casey's Hotel was still closed and again I did not get to eat any mussels.
We were heading for Castletownbere . . . .
Gentle reminder, double click on photos and they become HUGE.
After a beautiful drive from sea level, through a rocky and mountainous climb to 570 feet above sea level, then back down, we reached Castletownbere in forty-seven minutes time from Bantry. Here we found the Castletownbere fishing fleet, based in the second safest natural harbor in the world.
We enjoyed a delightful lunch of seafood chowder and panini at the Copper Kettle.
Leaving Castletownbere, heading back towards Glengarriff and Bantry.
This is an exceptionally good stretch of road - wide, plus smooth pavement. Highly unusual.
This is the more typical road and with the bad weather, some good roads have become horrible, if not impassable in some rural areas.
We took a minor diversion down to the shore . . . .
Down the boreen . . . .
Back on the road again . . . .
Some quick grocery shopping before heading back to Durrus. We are in great cheese country.
Something we have never seen anywhere . . . .
I learn something new every day!
It looks like you had another grand day.
ReplyDeleteI hope Casey's won't be a let down should it ever be open when you're in Glengarriff.
I'm assuming that you'll go over to Kenmare at some stage. That is a great trip through the tunnels, and they you could come back via The Healy Pass through Adrigole. Stunning scenery.
I so love your pics - I know where so many of the locations are shot, so it is a great pick-me-up on a Canadian winter's eve.
If you're going to the Mizen there is a fabulous wedge tomb near Golleen.
